Keanu Reeves had his breakout role as Ted “Theodore” Logan, one half of the titular duo of time-traveling slackers alongside Alex Winter’s Bill S. Preston, Esq., in Herek’s endearingly goofy-sweet sci-fi comedy about two San Dimas, California high school metalheads whose destined roles in shaping a future utopian society are jeopardized by their dismal grades in history class, compelling an emissary from the future (George Carlin) to send them on a whirlwind tour of epochs past to make the acquaintances of such storied figures as Sigmund Freud, Napoleon, and the Greek philosopher “So-crayts.” A surprise hit upon its delayed release, the Excellent Adventure introduced an entire lexicon of Cali surfer slang to teens the world over, and its admirers have been partying on ever since.
