Twenty-two years after emerging from the bush with his psychotropic, hallucinatory vision of the Vietnam War by way of Joseph Conrad and the lens of visionary cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, Coppola went upriver one more time on the hunt for his elusive masterwork. The result, featuring a full 49 minutes of previously unseen footage including a marvelous visit to a French plantation stuck outside of time, wasn’t a recut so much as a new movie, stranger and richer than ever before. The result is rarely screened, and almost never as it’s meant to be—on 35mm, for the full experience of lurid, languid spectacle.
