DIRECTOR: YOSHISHIGE YOSHIDA

CAST: RENTARô MIKUNI, YASUO MIYAKE, AKIKO KURANO

The final entry in Yoshida’s trilogy of excavations of Japanese dissident history, Coup d’Etat recounts events from the life of author, proto-fascist philosopher, and right-wing socialist rabble-rouser Ikki Kita (Rentaro Mikuni) from 1921 to 1936, when his writings inspired a failed uprising by Imperial Japanese Army officers. Standard biopic practice is eschewed, instead creating an elliptical narrative that emphasizes the subject’s psychology, placing particular importance on the influential encounter between Kita and a fiery young soldier (Yasuo Miyake) who becomes his protégé. Finishing the exhausting undertaking of his trilogy, Yoshida went on a thirteen-year hiatus from feature filmmaking.

Screening as a part of our Yoshishige Yoshida x 3 series.
