DIRECTOR: JEAN RENOIR
CAST: JEAN GABIN, MARíA FéLIX, FRANçOISE ARNOUL
One of the supreme let’s-put-on-a-show backstage dramas of cinema, a movie that conveys all the excitement of creative discovery and the comedown of closing night. In a soundstage fantasy of the bohemian Belle Epoque Montmartre that Renoir knew well from his youth, impresario Jean Gabin is hungry for a hit, struck by a bolt of inspiration when he decides to revive the classic cancan, hand-picking laundress Françoise Arnoul as the star of his new Moulin Rouge revue. A “composition in color,” per the director, Renoir’s French homecoming after fifteen years abroad is a paean to showmanship, and to the glories of art itself.
