Dos Santos used the memoir Brasilien (1557) by German adventurer Hans Staden—who was captured by the Tupinamba tribe but escaped to tell the tale—as the basis for Como Era Gostoso o Meu Francês,along with other historical accounts and records for this brilliant imagination of the contact and conflict that defined encounters between Europeans and native Brazilians. A Frenchman is captured; per their custom, his captors tell him he can live with them for eight moons, after which he will be sacrificed.
