DIRECTOR: MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI
CAST: STEVE COCHRAN, ALIDA VALLI, JACQUELINE JONES
Screening introduced by Rachel Kushner
Antonioni’s last film before the watershed of L’Avventura, Il Grido finds the filmmaker’s mature style fully in place, but is something of an outlier when compared to the examinations of estrangement and anomie ahead in its focus on the working-class—rather than bourgeois—experience. Steve Cochran is a sugar refinery worker who, rejected by mistress Alida Valli, walks off the job and wanders the foggy Po Valley, the landscape of Antonioni’s childhood, with their young daughter, brushing up against other lost souls in his peregrinations, fumblingly searching for a human connection nowhere to be found. Bewitching and bleak, and as purely moving as Antonioni has ever allowed himself to be.
Screening as part of Rachel Kushner's Dream Double Feature.
