A Texas tornado of a melodrama from Sirk, the master of the form features Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone as the neurotic scions of a Lone Star state oil tycoon and Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall as two relatively well-adjusted friends of the family caught up in the goings-on of the careless rich. Chock-a-block with overheated sexuality, suggestive visuals that include oil derricks and coin-powered hobby horses, and lurid Technicolor, it’s a corker of a drama about the debauched and damaged rich, and the people who have to step in to clean up their messes, a high point being Malone’s fatal rumba—deemed a “dance of death” by admirer R.W. Fassbinder.
