Pompei: Below the Clouds
Director: Gianfranco Rosi
2025 / 115min / DCP
An interest in people living precarious and transitory existences being one unifying feature of Rosi’s filmography, it is perhaps unsurprising that he would be drawn to Mount Vesuvius, the Phlegraean Fields volcanic caldera, and the sections of Naples close enough to both to feel their foreboding tremors. Archaeologists continue to extract artifacts buried by eruptions past while the general population steel themselves for the possibility that what happened to Pompeii long ago might happen again. While closely attuned to the specificities of the region in which it was shot, Below the Clouds speaks volumes about quotidian life in a world teetering on the precipice of disaster.
