Sans Soleil [35mm]
Director: Chris Marker
1983 / 103min / 35mm
Marker’s voyage through memory, history, and video games is a free-flow of images shot largely in Japan (a cat temple, sacred phalluses, horror movies, sleeping subway riders, an animatronic JFK), with detours to Guinea-Bissau, Iceland, and, for an extended homage to Vertigo, San Francisco. An alien travelog? The world’s most profound home movie? There’s nothing quite like it in the history of cinema.
